White Cloud by Ruth Andre

The rain is still coming down here in Northern California.  The creek is way up and has been for several days.  It makes for a true adventure getting across the creek and out of the valley. I have spent these rainy days in the studio painting except to venture out to feed and bring the horses to the barn.  We all get wet and the horses are full of energy so I step quickly under the yellow slicker. The painting today is of a wild Mustang stallion.  You may remember the post showing the work in progress photo a few weeks back.  I am happy to say it is now finished and ready to enjoy and it made for "A Painting Day".

Elk by Ruth Andre

This is a busy time of year for most artists.  We are entering shows and painting for coming shows and submitting portfolios to galleries in hopes of winning the favor of a judge or gallery owner.  The painting today is of an elk for the Elk Foundation.  With each new animal I paint there is a learning curve.  The nuance of the facial features is so different with each animal and the Elk was a mighty big boy to paint.  Please enjoy "A Painting Day".

I have been traveling the California coast all week. Interesting fact, the day after going over the Bixby bridge outside Big Sur, it gave out and that section of HWY 1 is closed. Good timing on our part. Right?

Okay so I scraped The Majestic Three and they become the URGENT two.  The Abstract Horse Painting is very unpredictable.  I finish a painting and I know.. I know before I walk away from the canvas that the journey is not done. I know that I have to go back and rework and free the horses.  It happens every time I try to do an impressionistic equine piece.

The layering of color with a palette knife is never predictable. Emotion and eye control the placement and use of color on the canvas.

Enjoy! Visit my daily blog at www.lauriepace.blogspot.com
